Black Hat Is Back 2 : The Evil and Dark Side of Search Engine Optimization
It’s pretty obvious that all webmasters would like to appear higher in the search engines for whatever keyword phrase they are pursuing. Google is a dang smart and sophisticated “machine” so what possibility does average joe web enthusiast have to appear in the search engines? Is there a technique to allow yourself an upper-hand above others that aren’t as knowledgeable
The solution to this million dollar question really depends on what market you are trying to penetrate – obviously if the niche you are entering is highly saturated, the most targeted keywords will have been already taken by your competition and it will be very difficult to appear on the first page.
Having said that, the search engines are definitely not 100% accurate. I’m sure you’ve experienced many times where you’ll enter a phrase to look for and the results are completely garbage - and out of these first 10 results, perhaps only 1 or 2 are actually relevant to what you’re searching for. Dang annoying to say the least when you’re constantly hitting the back button (Which Google now takes into consideration by the way - the bounce rate of a website can actually be determined based on how quick someone clicks the back button after landing on your site.)
Logic would then dictate, if you are providing relevant information that is highly related to the search keyword your visitor is searching for, then your “bounce rate” should be considerably less
Now despite all the above-board or “white hat” methods around, there have been some naughty webmasters who have managed top rankings in the search engines using evil tactics which are known as “spamdexing” – or Black Hat SEO Spamdexing or black hat seo methods are the use of various methods to deliberately manipulate web content pages to artificially increase their position in the SERPS Is it sneaky and/or evil to outrank OTHER people’s sites which are actually more relevant than your own? Absolutely. Are there lots of people doing it? Absolutely!
However, since Google is indeed getting considerably smarter, some of the typical techniques of manipulating the search engines simply won’t work any longer. Some of these techniques include, but are not limited to:
Meta-Tag Stuffing:
Using keyphrases in the Meta tags more than once and/or using phrases that are unrelated to the site’s content.
Keyphrase Stuffing:
This involves the practice of overusing a phrase to increase the amount of times the keyword appears on a page. Most modern search engines now have the ability to determine whether the frequency is above normal level.
Hidden or Invisible Links:
When a webmaster creates a network of links between multiple sites on the same or similar topic that he/she owns and then joins these together with invisible links. In most cases, these sites do not have unique content.
Hidden Text:
Putting text (usually keywords) where visitors will not see them to increase a page’s keyword frequency. In most cases, this is simply achieved by making the text the same color as the background color of the page ie. White words on a white background.
Link Spamming:
Google determines the page rank of a site or page by analyzing the amount of incoming links that site or page has – the more offsite pages that link to your page, the higher your page rank. Some webmasters may create multiple websites at different hosting accounts that all link to one another. This is the most common form of Black Hat SEO techniques.
Cloaking:
Cloaking involves coding your site so that the content that appears to a human visitor is vastly different to what a search engine sees.
Each of the above techniques is a form of Spamdexing or Black Hat SEO, and will usually get sneaky webmasters who utilize them to use banned from the search engine or “sandboxed” - which is a fancy word for being delisted from the main search results. Not the best thing to happen as a webmaster. One of the most aggressive marketers out there is Howie Schwartz and his teachings are documented in a video series called Black Hat Is Back 2.
